Early planting pros, cons: Weighing soybean risks and benefits

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Studies from Pioneer show that there are several benefits to early-planted soybeans.

Research consistently demonstrates that the timing of soybean planting influences soybean yield.

Early planting can result in high yields versus delayed planting, often due to improved resource capture and utilization.

“The goal of planting early is to increase yield potential,” said Steve Cromley, a Pioneer field agronomist in Missouri. “We can accomplish this by getting the plants to flower early and extend the period of reproductive growth.”

Understanding the risks and benefits allows farmers to make informed decisions to optimize soybean yield and ensure sustainable agricultural practices for the future, according to Pioneer.

Pros

• Studies show that early planting can result in high yields compared to delayed planting.

• Increased duration of reproductive growth and growing degree unit accumulation during that period.

Cons

• Risk of frost events.

• Possible adverse soil conditions affecting crop establishment.

• Possible need to replant.

A minimum soil temperature of 50 degrees is a good rule of thumb, as it is with corn, Cromley said.

“If you do plant before recommended planting dates, it’s advised to plant tilled fields first,” he said.

“Plant upland fields, avoid river and creek bottoms and don’t plant shallow. Following these recommendations can lessen the impact of a freeze event.”
