SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois pork producers boosted hog numbers in the second quarter of 2013.

All hogs and pigs in Illinois totaled 4.75 million head, 1 percent more than the same time a year ago and 2 percent more than last quarter.

The breeding herd was at 500,000 head, steady from a year ago and up 2 percent from the March quarter.

The Illinois market hog inventory, at 4.25 million head, was up 1 percent from a year ago and up 2 percent from March 1.

Illinois pork producers had 255,000 sows farrow in the March-May timeframe, also steady with a year ago and up 2 percent from the previous quarter.

The Illinois pig crop in the March-May timeframe was at 2.627 million head, and Illinois hog farmers saved 10.3 pigs per litter, up from 10.1 the previous quarter.

Illinois hog farmers intend to have 255,000 sows farrow in the June-to-August timeframe. That’s 2 percent more than the same time a year ago.

Farmers intend to have 255,000 sows farrow in the September-to-November quarter, up 4 percent from 2012 actual farrowings.
