DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa pork producers held the line in the second quarter, with all hogs and pigs in Iowa at 20.4 million head, unchanged from a year ago and slightly up from the March 1 inventory.

The Iowa market herd stood at 19.37 million head on June 1, about steady with the same period a year ago, and the Iowa breeding herd was at 1.03 million head, slightly up from a year ago.

Iowa pork producers had 495,000 sows farrow in the March-May time period, and the March-May pig crop was 5.2 million head.

Iowa hog farmers intend to have 500,000 sows farrow in the June-August timeframe, and they intend to have 495,000 head farrow in the September-November timeframe.
