This past weekend, I attended an Illinois Farm Bureau Young Leaders meeting in Sumner. I took the scenic route, from DeKalb to Springfield, then across through Taylorville and Effingham to Sumner. I noticed very different crop conditions every mile and was surprised by how good and how bad things looked.

For my area, things are still looking good. Some corn is over my head, which isn’t hard to get to — I am only 5 feet and 8 inches tall. I would think in the next week to 10 days that we will start to see tassels shooting out. Soybeans look good around the area, too. It’s going to be cool this week, so they should really grow great.

Things are slowing down a bit on the farm for me, so I’m working on cleaning and organizing our shop and storage sheds. Things get out of place fast in the heat of spring.
