Indiana Farm Bureau sets policy for 2021

Rural broadband a key issue for farmers

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Farm Bureau members expressed concerns about rural broadband connectivity during the annual delegate session.

This year the event was held virtually to determine policy that will guide the organization in 2021.

Randy Kron, president of INFB, said that COVID-19 has brought to light broadband connectivity issues as people work from home and students learn from home.

“There was a lot of discussion around broadband and how to get it to the rural communities,” he said. “Whether it’s for the technology we use on the farm, to our kids or grandkids doing e-learning. We need it so that rural communities are on a level playing field with our city friends.”

Members also discussed concerns about regulatory overreach in livestock facilities and other areas.

“It’s important to have some reasonable rules,” Kron said. “Farmers are good stewards of their land and livestock. We just have to have rules that are very transparent.”

Farm Bureau will continue to support township governments, he said.

Members also talked about annexation concerns and ways to support local packers and producers.

There was also a presentation on the new Farm Bureau health plan that will be available soon.

“Pre-sales for the plan start in early October, but they won’t take effect until Jan. 1,” Kron explained. “You do have to be a Farm Bureau member for 30 days before you can even apply.”
