INDIANAPOLIS — Gov. Eric Holcomb declared Sept. 20-26 as the first-ever Hoosier Heritage Barn Week. The week will be a time to celebrate heritage barns throughout the state and to discover additional ways to respect and preserve them.
The proclamation was made at the request of the Indiana Barn Foundation. The foundation seeks to promote the preservation of barns through the learning about barn and agriculture history, assisting with the restoration and preservation of heritage barns and preserving the Hoosier landscape.
The Indiana Barn Foundation recently published a booklet on the history and evolution of different types of barns.
“Indiana barns are disappearing fast,” the book states. “Every year we drive by familiar farmsteads and shake our heads as we watch the collapse of another iconic symbol of the Hoosier Heartland.”
The Indiana Barn Foundation is working with farmers to maintain and preserve landmarks.
