From the Fields: Playing catch-up

Mother Nature has been challenging for us this year. We farm near the river bottoms, and the river has been up. We’ve had multiple rains. We haven’t done much in the field for the last 10 days, which has put us way behind. We’re probably 80% completed with corn and a third on beans.

The last two years have been really good. Everything was planted on time. This year, we’re in a small pocket that seems to catch every rain that comes through.

As you travel around southern Indiana, the majority of the crops are in the ground and starting to grow. We’re struggling a little more on our farm. But we’ll get there. We just need a week of dry weather. We’re hoping this week will be productive.

It also put us way behind on our spraying. Yesterday and today we’ve worked to get that done because there’s rain in the forecast. We don’t want weeds to get ahead of us.

The crops we have planted look pretty good for the most part. We have decent stands. One little area got 3 inches plus of rain, which stunted its growth a bit. Overall it’s coming out of it.

What’s in the ground looks pretty good. We just have to get the rest of it in the ground. We’ve had two really good springs. After a year like this, it makes you appreciate that more.
