There were 4 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Aug. 4, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Illinois Field Office. Statewide, the average temperature was 78.2 degrees, 4.2 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 1.76 inches, 0.97 inches above normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 1% very short, 7% short, 75% adequate, and 17% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 1% very short, 11% short, 74% adequate, and 14% surplus.

Corn silking reached 94%, compared to 96% last year, and the five-year average of 93%. Corn dough reached 56%, compared to 50% last year, and the five-year average of 46%. Corn dented reached 4%, compared to 1% last year, and the five-year average of 2%. Corn condition was rated 1% very poor, 3% poor, 15% fair, 61% good, and 20% excellent.

Soybeans blooming reached 92%, compared to 92% last year, and the five-year average of 84%. Soybeans setting pods reached 77%, compared to 69% last year, and the five-year average of 54%. Soybeans condition was rated 2% very poor, 4% poor, 19% fair, 58% good, and 17% excellent.

Alfalfa hay second cutting reached 95%, compared to 95% last year.
