There were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Aug. 18, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Indiana Field Office. Statewide, the average temperature was 72.2 degrees, 0.6 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.90 inches, 0.02 inches above normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 5% very short, 23% short, 67% adequate, and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 7% very short, 25% short, 64% adequate, and 4% surplus.

Corn dough reached 71%, compared to 66% last year, and five-year average of 67%. Corn dented reached 25%, compared to 9% last year, and five-year average of 16%. Corn condition was rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 20% fair, 57% good, and 16% excellent.

Soybeans blooming reached 96%, compared to 93% last year, and five-year average of 93%. Soybeans setting pods reached 82%, compared to 77% last year, and five-year average of 74%. Soybeans condition was rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 21% fair, 57% good, and 15% excellent.
