There were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Aug. 25, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Indiana Field Office. Statewide, the average temperature was 67.6 degrees, 4.6 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.06 inches, 0.60 inches below normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 11% very short, 34% short, 53% adequate, and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 10% very short, 33% short, 55% adequate, and 2% surplus.

Corn dough reached 84%, compared to 79% last year, and the five-year average of 80%. Corn dented reached 43%, compared to 26% last year, and the five-year average of 32%. Corn mature reached 4%, compared to 1% last year, and the five-year average of 2%. Corn condition was rated 2% very poor, 6% poor, 21% fair, 56% good, and 15% excellent.

Soybeans setting pods reached 90%, compared to 86% last year, and the five-year average of 84%. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 7%, compared to 1 last year, and the five-year average of 2%. Soybeans condition was rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 22% fair, 56% good, and 15% excellent.
