There were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Sept. 8, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Illinois Field Office. Statewide, the average temperature was 65 degrees, 5.5 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.04 inches, 0.59 inches below normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 13% very short, 29% short, 57% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 11% very short, 26% short, 62% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Corn dented reached 82%, compared to 81% last year, and the five-year average of 75%. Corn mature reached 40%, compared to 34% last year, and the five-year average of 24%. Corn harvested for grain reached 2%, compared to 2% last year, and the five-year average of 1%. Corn condition was rated 2% very poor, 4% poor, 19% fair, 58% good, and 17% excellent.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 35%, compared to 21% last year, and the five-year average of 11%. Soybeans harvested reached 1%. Soybeans condition was rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 23% fair, 56% good, and 14% excellent.
