There were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Sept. 8, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Indiana Field Office. Statewide, the average temperature was 65 degrees, 4.9 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.10 inches, 0.53 inches below normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 22% very short, 41% short, 36% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 19% very short, 41% short, 39% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Corn dented reached 79%, compared to 65% last year, and the five-year average of 65%. Corn mature reached 25%, compared to 10% last year, and the five-year average of 15%. Corn harvested for silage reached 35%, compared to 28% last year, and the five-year average of 31%. Corn condition was rated 3% very poor, 6% poor, 23% fair, 54% good, and 14% excellent.

Soybeans setting pods leaves reached 97%, compared to 95% last year, and the five-year average of 95%. Soybeans harvested reached 1%. Soybeans condition was rated 3% very poor, 6% poor, 23% fair, 55% good, and 13% excellent.
