Illinois crop progress for the week ending Sept. 29

There were 4.6 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Sept. 29, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Illinois Field Office. Statewide, the average temperature was 66.5 degrees, 5.2 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 1.99 inches, 1.24 inches above normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 8% very short, 36% short, 49% adequate, and 7% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 13% very short, 36% short, 47% adequate, and 4% surplus.

Corn mature reached 85%, compared to 89% last year, and the five-year average of 70%. Corn harvested reached 21%, compared to 19% last year, and the five-year average of 16%. Corn condition was rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 18% fair, 58% good, and 19% excellent.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 86%, compared to 91% last year, and the five-year average of 69%. Soybeans harvested reached 24%, compared to 15% last year, and the five-year average of 11%. Soybeans condition was rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 23% fair, 57% good, and 15% excellent.

Winter wheat planted reached 11%, compared to 13% last year, and the five-year average of 8%. Winter wheat emerged reached 2%, compared to 1% last year, and the five-year average of 1%.
