Indiana crop progress for the week ending Sept. 29

There were 3.8 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Sept. 29, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Indiana Field Office. Statewide, the average temperature was 67.3 degrees, 6.6 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 2.62 inches, 1.85 inches above normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 16% very short, 28% short, 51% adequate, and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 19% very short, 38% short, 41% adequate, and 2% surplus.

Corn mature reached 81%, compared to 64% last year, and the five-year average of 63%. Corn harvested for grain reached 20%, compared to 11% last year, and the five-year average of 13%. Corn condition was rated 3% very poor, 7% poor, 28% fair, 50% good, and 12% excellent.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 86%, compared to 75% last year, and the five-year average of 73%. Soybeans harvested reached 23%, compared to 14% last year, and the five-year average of 14%. Soybeans condition was rated 3% very poor, 7% poor, 29% fair, 50% good, and 11% excellent.

Winter wheat planted reached 13%, compared to 10% last year, and the five-year average of 11%. Winter wheat emerged reached 2%, compared to 2% last year, and the five-year average of 2%.
