Indiana crop progress for the week ending Oct. 6

There were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Oct. 6, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Indiana Field Office. Statewide, the average temperature was 65.3 degrees, 6.5 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.09 inches, 0.68 inches below normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 15% very short, 31% short, 51% adequate, and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 18% very short, 38% short, 43% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Corn mature reached 91%, compared to 78% last year, and the five-year average of 77%. Corn harvested for grain reached 29%, compared to 19% last year, and the five-year average of 22%. Corn condition was rated 2% very poor, 7% poor, 30% fair, 50% good, and 11% excellent.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 92%, compared to 87% last year, and the five-year average of 85%. Soybeans harvested reached 36%, compared to 28% last year, and the five-year average of 28%. Soybeans condition was rated 2% very poor, 7% poor, 29% fair, 51% good, and 11% excellent.

Winter wheat planted reached 22%, compared to 22% last year, and the five-year average of 23%. Winter wheat emerged reached 6%, compared to 4% last year, and the five-year average of 5%.
