STARLIGHT, Ind. — Carl Huber Sr. passed away peacefully on Jan. 4 at the age of 84. His friends, family and community remember him as a compassionate man who loved his family and his farm.
“Today we celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of one of our co-founders, Carl Louis Huber Senior,” said the family at Huber’s Orchard & Winery in a statement.
“Born here on the farm on Oct. 25, 1940, Carl dedicated his entire 84 years of life to helping build Huber’s Orchard & Winery to what it is today. As part of the fifth generation of our family, he and his siblings painstakingly worked the land and sacrificed much to achieve their goals.”
In 1962, Huber married Linda (Zurschmeide) Huber. Together with Carl’s brother, Gerald, and his wife, Mary Jeanne, the four opened the doors of the original commercial operation in the 1970s for the u-pick operation that exists today.
Decades later, the family still implements his “farm first” approach to business.
The family often found Huber driving his Kubota side-by-side around the farm. He stopped in the strawberry fields, apple and peach orchards and pumpkin patches on his rounds.
He carved names into pumpkins with care for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren.
Huber was preceded in death by his wife and three brothers.
“An unparalleled work ethic, strong mind and body, generosity that knows no bounds and the most gentle and caring soul will be what we remember about Carl Sr. the most,” the family said.
“Our family appreciates your thoughts and prayers as we grieve the loss of our beloved Carl Sr.”
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be made in Huber’s memory to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Starlight.
