Sustainability at core of food supply chain

Do more with less

OWENSBORO, Ky. — Sustainability conversations are happening across the food value chain.

Key issues include air quality, water quality, soil health, carbon sequestration, land use, habitat management, pollinators, health and wellness, economic performance and market presence.

Marianne Smith Edge, founder of the AgriNutrition Edge, discussed sustainability at the Animal Agriculture Alliance Virtual Stakeholders Summit.

The team at AgriNutrition Edge works to improve dialogue understanding between agriculture industry and consumers. They do so by gathering insights, translating science and providing strategic counsel.

“With our sustainability conversation, it’s not animal versus plant” sustainability, Smith-Edge said. “But really looking at food waste. Forty percent of all food is wasted.

“It’s important that we position modern ag practices at the forefront of solving the sustainable food problem — feeding more with less.”

If sustainable diets that are nutrient-rich, affordable, culturally appropriate and respectful of the environment are the goal, then collaboration and consensus-building are essential, she said.
