Clean up fields after fireworks

PEKIN, Ill. — As the Fourth of July celebrations come to a close, it’s a good idea to look out for your pets and livestock.

“There are many things you can do before, during and after the greatest summer holiday we know,” said Nicole Johnson, veterinarian at Pekin Animal Hospital and president of the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association.

“Your pet is part of your family. Your livestock is your business. How will you protect them and deal with their fear, anxiety and physical and mental health when celebrating the holiday?”

Johnson suggested the following tips following firework season:

• Look for firework debris in your yard or pasture. Animals may eat remnants of firework explosions, which can carry heavy metals, gunpowder, plastics and other elements that are poisonous or are nondigestible.

• If a cookout was held, make sure to pick up any food scraps, disposable plates and cutlery and any other items that are not digestible.

As summer continues, it’s also important to keep pets and livestock cool. Provide plenty of shade throughout the day.

It is also important to provide fresh and clean water and avoid over handling animals during the heat of the day.
