Hagie sprayer equipped with 2,000-gallon capacity

BONDURANT, Iowa — Everything behind the front boom of the Hagie Self-Propelled Sprayers is new from the ground up.

The three new Hagie models are the STS12, STS16 and STS20 with tank capacity from 1,200 to 2,000 gallons. Farmers can choose from four sizes of booms, including 90, 100, 120 and 132 feet.

“The PowrSpray solution is pretty unique and gives a lot of functionality for loading the machine,” said Travis Lawell, John Deere product manager during the John Deere Media Event. “The dedicated loading pump will pull product at 300 gallons per minute, which gets you back in the field quickly.”

“A sprayer works in sprints to accelerate quickly to the targeted speed and sometimes during the sprints we can be off rate,” added Newt Lingenfelter, with John Deere. “PowrSpray lays down a better rate with ExactApply.”

With ExactApply, farmers can apply products at a wide range of rates.

“I don’t have to get out and change the tips near as frequently as I did with a conventional spray system,” Lingenfelter said.

Any place where the solution slows down in the boom could have fallout.

“ExactApply unlocks the recirculation system which continues high fluid velocity through the boom back to the tank,” Lingenfelter said. “It also recirculates waste water very well during rinsing.”

Applicators need sprayers to be more productive to fit into tight application windows.

“With the 2,000-gallon tank, that lets me go further between fills,” Lawell said. “If I’m spraying 10 gallons per acre, that’s 80 additional acres versus a 1,200-gallon machine so I’m able to cover another field.”

“We can spray any liquid product such as 32% nitrogen and with herbicides some are going back to older formulations to fight resistance to Roundup so carrier rates are going up,” Lingenfelter said.

With the new direct cab entry ladder on the Hagie sprayers, operators now have half the steps from the cab to the fill location compared to previous models.

“Sprayers are tended frequently so operators are up and down the ladder often,” Lawell said. “The controls for the product filling of the main solution tank and rinse tank are on the ladder, as well as the keypad to control the solution system.”

Inside the cab, the Hagie sprayers have the same CommandARM as the John Deere sprayers.

“If I’m a co-op with multiple sprayers in the fleet, operators can hop in the Hagie sprayer and it operates exactly like the John Deere sprayer,” Lawell said.

The cab features an electric door cinch with remote opening.

“With the close door cinch, you don’t have to slam the door, it closes itself,” Lawell said. “The ultimate package comes with a key fob to lock, unlock and open the door remotely.”

In addition, the cab has a Category IV filtration system.

“The fan continuously pressurizes the cabin,” Lingenfelter said. “It keeps dirt and contaminates out with the filters and anytime the key is on, it’s running.”

“That is standard on all Hagie machines to provide the cleanest operating environment,” Lawell said.

“With the suspension redesign, the visibility from the cab is greatly improved,” he said. “That is critical when you’re trying to go 12 to 14 mph through tasseled corn.”

The suspension components have been shifted down to the wheels.

“That offers a fantastic ride when you’re going 20 to 25 mph,” Lawell said.

All Wheel Steer is a standard feature on all Hagie Sprayers.

“The system is designed for the back wheels to follow the front so there are only two sets of tracks through the field,” Lingenfelter said. “This allows you to stay in the planter pass and do no more damage to the crop.”

All STS Sprayers are powered by the John Deere Powertech 9.0L Engine.

“We’ve increased the power on all models,” Lawell said. “This gives us a lot more torque and customers will feel that when they go through a wet spot with the 400-horsepower rated engines that are the same engines in the 8R tractors.”

The hydraulically-driven cooling fan is reversible.

“If I pick up tassels, I can reverse the fan, push the debris off and keep my machine cooling properly,” Lawell said.

“We’ve really reduced the platforms and weight on the machines which we traded to get more capacity,” Lingenfelter added. “From the platform you can access everything you need for maintenance including the batteries, engine oil, air filter, coolant and hydraulic oil.”
