Langreck: Take the good with the bad

Now is the time when individuals tend to begin thinking about what their New Year’s resolution might be. I know that probably everyone has had a miserable 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but lately I have been trying to find the positive, happy moments that still took place amid everything else that happened this past year.

For me, one of the biggest positive moments would be that my youngest daughter, Reagan, who has a rare genetic condition, despite having some setbacks to her schooling and therapy due to the pandemic, recently went to her genetic doctor for an in-person visit.

Although it had been several months since Reagan had seen her genetic specialist in person, you could tell as soon as he walked in the room that he was shocked and surprised by the little girl who was running around the room chattering up a storm.

He quickly noted how much she had grown up developmentally-wise and that the new little purple glasses she was sporting seemed to be helping with the issue she had with her eyes crossing.

Although I still had several concerns, especially with her not growing fast height-wise, which the doctor also said wasn’t where he wanted it to be, which can happen with her genetic disorder, she did pass her developmental assessment with flying colors.

Even though she still has a long road ahead of her and is not allowed to go out in stores and public places or to her preschool in-person due to her lowered immune system, she seems to always have a smile on her face and does something each day that never ceases to amaze me.

Knowing that Reagan is doing well and her doctor is happy with her progress put a positive spin on some of the negative things that have happened in 2020.

I encourage each and every one of you that reads this to reflect back on the year and find the positive moments during the year that maybe were overlooked.
